  1. 1762-1794. French poet, born in
  2. Constantinople. His lyrical poetry was later
  3. to inspire the Romantic movement, but he was
  4. known in his own time for his uncompromising
  5. support of the constitutional royalists after
  6. the Revolution. In 1793 he went into hiding,
  7. but finally he was arrested and, on 25 July
  8. 1794, guillotined. While in prison he wrote
  9. Jeune Captive/Captive Girl and the political
  10. Iambes, published after his death.
